Overseeding – What You Need to Know

Want to fill in bare spots and revitalize your lawn? Overseeding is the answer. This is especially true if you have an older lawn. As the Brentwood area’s experts in overseeding, Lawn Doctor of SE New Hampshire knows that, as your lawn ages, it grows weaker and begins to break down. But when you overseed, you’re essentially replacing the old with the new – producing a lush, green lawn as a result.

Signs You Need Overseeding

lush lawn after overseedingThe process of overseeding simply involves planting grass seed into existing turf. It’s one small step that can help you achieve a thicker, healthier lawn with stronger natural resistance to weeds, insects, diseases, and extreme weather conditions. But how can you tell your lawn needs overseeding? Look for these signs:

  • You have an older home – with an older lawn that hasn’t ever been aerated or re-seeded.
  • You’re seeing brown patches scattered around your yard.
  • Grass is looking weak, limp, and ragged.
  • Areas are starting to thin out, or you’re noticing bald spots.

When to Overseed

Generally speaking, it’s best to perform overseeding in the Brentwood area in the late summer or in early fall. When you do, you’re not exposing new seed to harsh summer temperatures and also giving new grass time to get established before winter rolls around. Just make sure that, about a month before overseeding, you don’t fertilize your lawn. Fertilization can produce vigorous growth of your existing grass, which will limit the ability for new seeds to get established and thrive.

Consider Aeration First

Overseeding can produce healthy, new growth. However, if your lawn experiences heavy foot traffic, or if you have clay soils, consider core aeration first. This not only breaks up soil compaction and thatch build-up, but also provides for better seed-to-soil contact. In addition, it enables more water, oxygen, nutrients, and sunlight to penetrate deep into the root zone of older grasses, as well as new seedlings.
