Do you have a green thumb? The answer might surprise you. While today we associate the term green thumb with someone who is an avid gardener, good with plants, fluent in flowers, absolutely luxuriating in a yard full of lush, green grass, the term green thumb originally was used by England’s King Edward the First – who used the phrase to identify the serf who had done the best job securing the king’s favorite springtime culinary treat: fresh green peas.
As a lawn care company in Holbrook, we can assure you that it’s absolutely possible to have a fantastic lawn without ever once shelling a fresh green pea. What you do need, however, is to have a healthy lawn established and then maintain a simple consistent routine of lawn care.
Getting a Great Lawn Started: Understanding Power Seeding
Back in King Edward’s time, grass seed was planted in much the same way any other grain seed would be planted. This is called the broadcast method, where the small grass seeds are gently and evenly tossed onto to the dirt. As long as the conditions were favorable, the birds not too hungry, and the seed of decent quality, grass might grow. Maybe.
Today, we use power seeding. Why? Because power tools are cool. If King Edward the First had had power seeding equipment, he absolutely would have used it. But he didn’t, and that’s sad for him. We, on the other hand, can enjoy the fast, thick grass growth that results from power seeding – which uses a special machine to deposit carefully prepared grass seed – pelletized with a growth boosting combination of minerals and nutrients – directly into the soil.
Once the grass is growing, your lawn will need to be fertilized two to three times a year. Additionally, treatments for grubs and other lawn pests can be provided by your local lawn service. That’s the routine to keep the lawn looking great – no green thumb required!
